Dave Grohl Honored With 900-Pound Drumsticks By Hometown

Gift to be unveiled this Saturday

Dave Grohl’s hometown of Warren, Ohio isn’t satisfied with just naming a street after the rock star. This weekend the town will unveil its latest tribute to the Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer, as the Youngstown Vindicator reports: two 900-pound drumsticks created from poplar logs.

The comically oversized sticks will be shown to the public for the first time this Saturday, July 7th, during a concert at the Warren Amphitheater, where they’ll remain until September, when they’ll be moved to Dave Grohl Alley. No word on whether Grohl will attend the unveiling, though it’s possible he might show up, as the Foo Fighters’ next gig isn’t until August.

According to Joe O’Grady, a Warren policeman and president of the promotional organization Main Street Warren, the final touches were recently added to the sticks with feathers etched in to mimic the tattoos on Grohl’s arms.

Back in 2009 Warren dedicated a street to Groh, who was born in the town, though he moved to Alexandria, Virginia when he was quite young. The rocker, however, still has plenty of family in the Warren area.

Grohl has remained fairly quiet since he made his 11th appearance on Saturday Night Live recently – making him the most frequent musical guest in the show’s history. It’s possible he’s at work on his upcoming documentary Sound City about the legendary Van Nuys recording studio of the same name. Or he’s taking a well-earned rest.
