In two years, Delhi progressive death metal band Fragarak have released a full-length album [Crypts of Dissimulation] and have hit the road since performing across the country and in Kathmandu in Nepal. It’s no mean feat, considering Delhi’s metal scene is parched for support. Fragarak, though, have no plans of slowing down. In addition to working on new material, the band will also play two festival shows in China ”“ the Yangtze River Music Festival in Zhenjiang this month and at Asia Metal Festival in Shanghai next month.

Fragarak’s mantra is well summed-up by their vocalist Supratim Sen, who says Delhi bands often lack sustenance. Sen adds, “It’s important for potential bands to be patient and practise, while keeping expectations as low as possible.” Crypts of Dissimulation was a remarkably fresh sound from the progressive death metal genre, which has usually been littered with bands worshipping Sweden’s Opeth. Says Sen about the band’s writing process for their debut album, “We were always clear of wanting to create an album with a non-generic sound.” The band began recording tracks early in 2012 and released the album in May 2013, following which they were signed to metal label Transcending Obscurity’s Indian sub-label. Their new material is taking shape during jam sessions between guitarists Ruben Franklin and Arpit Pradhan and bassist Kartikeya Sinha. Says Sen about new material, “It’s going to be way more experimental.”

Although the China shows will be their second international trip after they played at Nepal Death Fest in January, Sen wants more gigs in India as well, but won’t jump on the college festival circuit. Says Sen, “The passion for metal is unmatched in India.” The band will perform four songs off the six-track Crypts of Dissimulation and are still deliberating over whether they should throw in a cover. Says Sen, “We’re looking at this as an opportunity to build a bridge. Chinese metalheads will like Indian metal more now.”
