After years of writing layered, instrumental rock as Mixtaped Monk, Hyderabad-based guitarist and composer Arka Sengupta tuned back into rock from the likes of Dire Straits, Soundgarden and even newer prog acts such as The Pineapple Thief and decided to create a new project. Sengupta says about his latest creation, Home Brewed Universe, “All I had in mind was that I had to somehow blend my post-rock/post-metal sensibilities with my classic rock/Seventies progressive rock/grunge influences.”

To add to that, he was gifted a Rickenbacker bass guitar for his birthday – a prized possession for anyone who doesn’t joke around about the importance of rhythm in songwriting – and created the bass riff for the song “Convergence I.” The layered, vibrant song still retains the wide-eyed enchantment of Mixtaped Monk, but brings in more guitar melodies than layers of sound. He says about undertaking a different songwriting process, “One of the biggest hurdles I faced creatively was getting out of the habit of creating soundscapes and focusing on writing straight out rock tracks.”

Off Home Brewed Universe’s upcoming debut album Instances, which releases on March 8th, “Convergence I” is Sengupta’s interpretation of the joys of being in love. He adds, “The album is essentially a shout out to those moments in life that make it worth living, like when you discover something new or when you create something worthwhile or when you realize that you are in love.”
