Mumbai-born Natania Lalwani’s journey in music began at the age of nine when she started learning the piano. By the time she was 15, she was also playing the guitar and writing her own songs. Her love for music eventually led her to pursue the Voice and Songwriting degree at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles in 2011, following which she went on to release a handful of bright, acoustic songs. Her brand new track “Prisoner,” however, takes a slightly darker turn.

“I wrote the song when I was stuck in a place of fear, not doing the things I really wanted to do,” says Lalwani about why “Prisoner” is so different from her previous work. “I think we all make choices everyday and to really be alive, we need to get rid of the fear and do all the things that scare us, because if we don’t, we end up being prisoners.”

The soul/pop track’s synth-heavy melodics and haunting horn section make it an unlikely dance song. The chorus is especially catchy with Lalwani singing, “My heart is a prisoner/Is a prisoner/ In its own home.” “Prisoner” was created in collaboration with producer Josh Hawkins who Lalwani met in Nashville, Tennessee last year. “I showed him the song and he brought it to life,” she says.
