Gig Preview: Kush Upadhyay Trio at The Quarter in Mumbai
The guitarist will perform material off his 2017 record ‘Impulsive Decisions’
For those of you that indulge in primarily guitar-based music, Mumbai-guitarist Kush Upadhyay is someone you cannot miss live. The musician – who released his third record Impulsive Decisions last year – is all set to perform at Mumbai venue The Quarter on June 22nd along with bassist Sheldon D’Silva and drummer Gino Banks. “The trio is a blues, rock and jazz inspired project and [is] heavily improvisational based,” says Upadhyay.
The band will mainly perform material off Impulsive Decisions as well as a few covers at the gig. He says, “Every time we play this music it’s interpreted differently and that’s what I’m looking forward to.” D’Silva and Banks were also part of the recording process for the album.
Upadhyay who played a trio set at Pune venue Swig earlier this week, tells us that he’s also been working on his fourth album which is due to release later this year. The upcoming record will feature bassist Nathan Thomas, vocalist Azamaan Hoyvoy and Blackstratblues’ guitarist Warren Mendonsa and drummer Jai Row Kavi. Mendonsa is also helping produce the yet-to-be titled album.
On the forthcoming record, Upadhyay says, “This project is completely different from the last three albums I’ve put out.” He adds, “This is heavier and the entire vibe and sound is different. Also this is the first time I’m putting out a vocal album. It is basically me going back in time and making music that inspired me to pick up my instrument in the first place.”
