Hear Will Smith’s First Song in More Than a Decade

Will Smith returned to music for the first time in a decade Friday with the actor-rapper’s appearance on the remix of Colombian dance group Bomba Estéreo’s “Fiesta.” Smith first heard the Latin Grammy-nominated act’s song during a recent trip to Colombia and approached the “electro tropical” group to collaborate on a remix. A music video for the collaboration ”“ which features Smith rapping in Spanish ”“ was recently filmed on Los Angeles and will premiere in the near future.

“When I was told that Will Smith wanted to collaborate on a remix with Bomba, I couldn’t believe it,” Bomba Estéreo’s founder/multi-instrumentalist Simón Mejia said in a statement. “This opportunity to work with Will was beyond anything we have dreamed of. It’s not a traditional featuring ”“ it’s just magic. We all had a blast together at the video shoot, and we want to thank Will for being so warm and such a pleasure to work with … and for rapping in Spanish!”

Smith teased a “Fiesta” collaboration last month when he posted a selfie with the group on Facebook to congratulate them for receiving multiple nominations at the upcoming Latin Grammys.

Other than occasionally appearing on late-night shows or Las Vegas pool parties to beatbox “It Takes Two,” Smith has largely abandoned the music industry since the release of his 2005 LP Lost and Found. However, earlier this year, Smith hinted that he might be ready to rejoin the music world after revealing that he hit the studio with Kanye West to work on new tracks.

“I went into the studio with Kanye. I’m thinking about it. I’m exploring,” Smith said while promoting his film Focus in February. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet, but I’m exploring. I’m in a creative ceiling. My son tells me I have to write out the things I don’t like. I can’t write and stop ”“ I have to keep going and going and write them out. I’ve never worked like that before, but I think I might give that a shot.”

Before staging his musical comeback, Smith will next aim for an Oscar nomination for his role in the upcoming football drama Concussion. In 2016, Smith will also appear as a member of DC Comics’ Suicide Squad.
