John Mayer Pairs ‘Paper Doll’ With Prancercise Clip

New single rumored to be about former girlfriend Taylor Swift

Jun 19, 2013

Prancercising is America’s favorite new craze, and John Mayer is hopping on the bandwagon in the lyric video for “Paper Doll,” the first single from his upcoming record Paradise Valley. In the clip prancercise expert Joanna Rohrback demonstrates “a prance to romance to” set to the tune of Mayer’s sweet, subtle heartbreaker, built around a lilting, circuitous guitar lick.

Despite the lightness of the tune (and the supremely goofy lyric video), “Paper Doll” carries a somber weight, and there’s speculation that Mayer wrote it about former girlfriend Taylor Swift (who supposedly chronicled their relationship in her song “Dear John,” which Mayer said “humiliated me”). The only ostensible lyrical hints seem to be Mayer’s recurring use of the color red and maybe the line “You’re like 22 girls in one” ”“ though those could be about any ex, or just a breakup in general.

While there’s no release date yet for Paradise Valley, the record’s first single comes just a few weeks after Mayer announced he was working on the follow-up to 2012’s Born and Raised. Mayer planned to keep fans up to date on his progress with a series of YouTube clips that offer a behind-the-scenes look at his work in the studio.

Along with the new album, Mayer is set for a massive summer tour that marks his official return to the stage after undergoing two rounds of surgery to repair a granuloma in his throat. Mayer’s trek kicks off July 6th at Summerfest at the Marcus Amphitheater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
