It’s a big risk to name your song after one of the most memorable TV shows in recent years, but Kolkata post punk band Jeepers Creepers’ vocalist-guitarist Ananda Mitra brushes off the notion. Says Mitra about “Breaking Bad,” their new single released yesterday, “It’s not really anything related to the show. It’s actually about people going through a change in their life and breaking bad. I was personally at a stage where I wanted to carry on with music and go back to things I’ve lost touch with.”

Mitra talks about change especially with regard to his band lineup ”“ after guitarist Rishi Dutta and drummer Sourav Ghosh left the band to pursue their careers late last year. Mitra and bassist Souvik Bhattacharya later roped in drummer Monarch Bannerjee [from Kolkata post-hardcore band Tint] and reformed as a three-member group in December. Says Mitra, “Not only did we lose the original lineup, but we were down to one guitarist. I had to think differently [about writing]. I want it to sound fuller.” With the help of producer Sayan Sandipto, the band is now recording new material for a five or six-track EP Rubik’s Cube, slated to release in November. Mitra says the band wants to release as many singles as possible until they have enough funds to record the EP.

Jeepers Creepers will perform with their new lineup for the first time in Bengaluru this month, with a 90-minute set, including originals such as “She Digs a Whippersnapper,” “Seven Pounds” and a cover of Arctic Monkeys’s “Fake Tales of San Francisco.”
