Lorde Sets Lover Ablaze in Striking Video for Disclosure’s ‘Magnets’

New Zealand singer seeks vengeance after torrid affair

Oct 01, 2015

Lorde leaves an illicit lover lasciviously devoted and enflamed in the striking new video for “Magnets,” the New Zealand singer’s collaboration with UK production duo Disclosure.

The clip opens on a luxurious party in the Hollywood Hills, the sky painted purple as Lorde looks longingly at an empty pool before sashaying through the crowd and catching the eye of the host. “Magnets” builds as their relationship heats up, with Lorde crooning the scintillating but foreboding hook, “Let’s embrace the point of no return.”

Amidst Lorde’s torrid scenes with the man, his ties with his wife grow stilted and strained. At the end, however, the two women join forces, and Lorde, donning a slick, vicious vinyl jacket, returns to the pool where she first met the man, finds him tied to a chair and kicks him into the water. For good measure, she tosses a lighter into the liquid and sets him ablaze.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Disclosure’s Howard and Guy Lawrence described feeling an instant bond with Lorde when she joined them in the studio to make “Magnets.” “She turned up on her own, no management or bodyguard,” Howard said. “That’s the most equal collaboration on the record. You can really hear her sound ”” she has this sassy yet vulnerable thing.”

“Magnets” is one of a number of high-profile collaborations on Disclosure’s new LP, Caracal, which also features The Weeknd, Sam Smith, Miguel and jazz singer Gregory Porter. The new album marks the follow-up to the group’s widely acclaimed 2013 breakthrough debut, Settle.

“There’s not any really club music on this one,” Guy Lawrence said of the differences between the two records. “It’s all very club-influenced, because of the beats, but every song is like ‘Latch’ or ‘White Noise’ ”” a fully structured pop song.”
