The American thrash metal band Megadeth have been announced as the new headliners at music and adventure sports festival MTV Xtreme. Megadeth replace rock band Stone Temple Pilots, who were to play their  debut show in India at MTV Xtreme, have called off their performance along with all upcoming shows owing to scheduling conflicts.

Megadeth, who released their fourteenth album Super Collider in June last year, will return to India for the third time on February 16th in Delhi NCR. The band, led by vocalist-guitarist Dave Mustaine, first performed in India in 2008 as part of Rock In India, alongside metal band Machine Head and returned in 2012, at the NH7 Weekender in Delhi.

On January 27th, a statement released by Australian music festival Soundwave, where STP were scheduled to play two shows in February in Melbourne and Sydney, announced the band’s withdrawal from the lineup: “The recording of the new album has now gone beyond schedule and sadly the availability of the recording studio, engineers and the producer or lack thereof dictates that the band have had to cancel their upcoming engagements.” The band, who fired original vocalist and founding member Scott Weiland in February last year, released their first release with Bennington [High Rise EP] in October 2013.

The announcement of canceling a tour which included shows Indonesia, India and Australia comes just two weeks after STP were announced as headliners at MTV Xtreme. Says Jaideep Singh, senior vice president and business head at Integrated Network Solutions, Viacom 18, “Due to a delay in their recording schedule, Stone Temple Pilots has cancelled all their upcoming gigs and concerts in Asia, including MTV Xtreme. But we’re happy to say that the show will go on.”

Currently, the lineup of the festival includes electro rock band Pentagram, hard rock veterans Parikrama, rock band Indus Creed, groove metal band Providence and alt/grunge rock band Blakc.

MTV Xtreme takes place on February 16th, 2014 at Buddh International Circuit, Delhi NCR. Entry: Rs 3,500 (VIP), Rs 1,500 (general) and Rs 950 (student). Tickets available here.
