MGMT Play New Song ‘Mystery Disease’ Live

Bombastic track will be group’s on new album due in June

May 02, 2013

MGMT visited Penn State University last Friday, where they played the new song “Mystery Disease.” The psychedelic electro-rockers accompanied the bombastic track with a sea of jellyfish-like visuals, and Andrew VanWyngarden’s fleeting vocals skated softly over thunderous percussion crashes and an ominous synth lead. Later, the visuals turn into a colorful, drumming figure that flickers and morphs into a nebulous mass, which in turn transforms into VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser.

“Mystery Disease” will be on MGMT’s upcoming album, MGMT, their followup to 2010’s Congratulations. “We’re not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it,” Goldwasser told ROLLING STONE in January regarding the new album, which is set for a June release.

MGMT kicked off their current tour with the Penn State show; they’ll next play tonight at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine. They also released new track “Alien Days” as a cassette for Record Store Day earlier this month.
