YouTube’s Simple Superstar, Wilbur Sargunaraj, performs this weekend in the Deccan, talks about his forthcoming movie and a house album

Little escapes the heightened cultural sensitivity of the viral Indian Borat. YouTube sensation Wilbur Sargunaraj is putting all his multicultural expressions and experiences in a movie, titled Simple Superstar, which is scheduled to go on floors early next year. Scouting talent chiefly through his various social media channels, including Facebook, Sargunaraj says everyone from the female lead to the DOPs will be picked up online. “I have so many people and fans looking forward to working on this project. I am super excited,” says Sargunaraj. The movie will be directed by Canadian filmmaker Jay Field, who is finalising the shooting schedules and talent with Sargunaraj in Chennai.

As the moniker suggests, “the movie is about my journey of how I became India’s first YouTube star. I will be tackling subjects like the definition of success being a ‘First Class’ artist, how to make the common extraordinary and subjects that are taboo in the world around us,” explains Sargunaraj. While biting his tongue against full-disclosure on the project, Sargunaraj reveals, “There is a subplot. It is a very simple story and not too preachy or comic or philosophical.” While he plans to finish shooting the movie sometime in April, the movie should be ready for release sometime in August.

“The music will be an essential part of the movie. There will be three new unreleased tracks besides ‘Love Marriage’ and ‘Cricket.’ I will also be travelling to Beirut to work with local musicians on a pop-style Arabic track for the movie,” says Sargunaraj, who has studied music in New York, LA, Cuba, Japan and the Caribbean. An ace drummer, Sargunaraj is heavily inspired by Havana beats and Afro rhythms.

Meanwhile, fans can catch him live in concert on November 18 and 19 on his India tour presented by Mumbai-based organisers Culture Shoq, in Bengaluru and Chennai respectively. “I am going to play all my greatest hits plus a house-remix of one of my tracks, sent by a fan. It’s a fabulous mix and I will open my gigs with that song. It is a surprise,” promises Sargunaraj, who is also planning on releasing a house mix album sometime later next year.

Serving testament to the fact that the First-Class star’s fanbase is global, Welsch punk-rockers, KD Knows My Name released a 11-track tribute album, Tales From Tamil Nadu, of his best known songs, including ‘First Class Meet,’ ‘Simple Superstar,’ ‘Dance In Dubai’ and more. The album dropped on iTunes last week and can be downloaded here.
