Mumbai-based alt metal band Goddess Gagged’s vocalist Siddharth Basrur has a soft spot for love songs. As un-metal as that sounds, Basrur has been working on putting together his debut solo album called Chasing Rain, which he describes as a love story.

The 10-track album is an anthology of pickup lines leading to chase sequences, conversations and  experiences involving a girl named Rain. “In the album, I’m seeing a girl called Rain and that was the theme I had in mind when I started writing the songs in March this year. By April, I had 15 songs written,” says Basrur. The songwriter adds that he deliberately chose happier themes to keep the mood of the album light and joyful. “I wanted to write simple songs on an acoustic guitar and I wanted them to be happy,” says Basrur. If you haven’t already guessed it by now, the album is also an ode to the woman in Basrur’s life.

The singer released the debut single, “Rain,” from the album last week. Basrur has been recording the album at friend and bandmate, producer Ayan De’s Midicore Studios in North Mumbai. “Ayan and I have made music together as bandmates [Bones for Bertie and The Venus Porject] and we know each other’s strengths really well,” says Basrur, who has been recording the album along with Zain Calcuttawala on drums, Jishnu Guha on guitars, backing vocals and harmonica, and Adil Kurwa on bass.

At his two-hour plus solo set tomorrow at Blue Frog, Mumbai Basrur plans to unveil more songs from the new album including “Stay” and “In Between”, old material and a few surprise covers. Basrur plans to release Chasing Rain in October.
