See Explosive First ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Trailer With Scarlett Johansson

Beloved manga and acclaimed anime film receives Hollywood treatment in director Rupert Sanders’ adaptation

Nov 14, 2016

The dynamic first trailer for Ghost in the Shell, the Hollywood adaptation of the acclaimed anime film, has arrived.

In the sci-fi blockbuster, Scarlett Johansson plays the lead role of “the Major,” a half-human, half-cyborg leader of an elite task force dubbed Section 9.

“Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology,” the film’s synopsis promises.

Like its source material, Ghost in the Shell will also tackle questions about artificial intelligence and technology run amok.

While Johansson’s casting was initially met with backlash and accusations that the role had been “whitewashed,” fans of the legendary manga can take solace that the special effects and futuristic visuals have been faithfully translated to the big screen by director Rupert Sanders.

Similarly, in a bonus featurette, Mamoru Oshii, the director of the 1995 animated film, approved of the 2017 version, which arrives on March 31st.
