See New Video for Jeff Buckley’s Smiths Cover ‘I Know It’s Over’

Late singer’s rendition of ‘The Queen Is Dead’ track features on upcoming compilation ‘You and I’

Feb 12, 2016

You and I, a new compilation featuring 10 unreleased Jeff Buckley recordings, arrives on March 11th. Featured on the collection is the late singer’s delicate, emotional rendition of the Smiths’ “I Know It’s Over,” one of a handful of covers to appear on the posthumous album and the recipient of a new video premiering exclusively at Rolling Stone.

The nostalgic, poignant “I Know It’s Over” video, directed by Amanda Demme, tells the story between a mother and her young son, with the latter unable to sleep in his own bed. There are subtle nods to Buckley throughout the video: A stroll through the child’s room reveals lettered blocks with the initials “J” and “B,” and later, the son strums his guitar while watching grainy footage of Buckley performing.

Amy Redford, daughter of film legend Robert Redford, served as executive producer on the “I Know It’s Over” video. “When I first heard Jeff, he gave me permission to feel fully and with contradiction,” Redford tells Rolling Stone. “He inspired me to fight for authenticity, and to feel confidence in simplicity. To collaborate on these songs coming to life, and to see the community of people who Jeff touched, has been a privilege.”

You and I also includes Buckley’s versions of songs by Bob Dylan (“Just Like a Woman”), Sly & the Family Stone (“Everyday People”) Led Zeppelin (“Night Flight”) alongsie a pair of originals: “Grace” (presented here as the track’s first solo performance) and “Dream of You and I.” “I Know It’s Over” is one of two Smiths covers from The Queen Is Dead that will appear on You and I along with “The Boy With the Thorn in His Side.”
