The first in the monthly series of gigs called The Scene, jointly organized by the Mumbai-based music webzine NH7.in and Blue Frog, kicks off tonight at the South Mumbai club. The gig also marks Mumbai punk rock band The Lightyears Explode’s album launch with Pune-based electro artist Rohan Hastak aka Big City Harmonics opening the show with a 45-minute set and Chennai garage rockers Skrat playing an hour-long set ahead of the launch.

The Lightyears Explode guitarist Saurabh Roy says that his band will play their first full length album, The Revenge of Kalicharan, in its entirety. Says Roy: “It’s a free gig, so anyone can show up, which is awesome. I think a lot more kids will be showing up.” Guest artists on The Lightyears Explode set include Rohit “P-Man” Pereira, one half of Mumbai-based dubstep duo ViceVersa, who will take stage for “The P-man Explodes,” a track that also features on the band’s debut album. “I practised it with the band and it’s going to be crazy. It’s just one song, but I hope I remember the lyrics. Otherwise I’ll have to come up with random words,” says Pereira, adding that he will imitate the sex noises heard on the track “depending on my state and the vibe at the gig.”

NH7.in is also setting up a merch table at the gig for bands to sell T-shirts, mugs, stickers besides any other merchandize that the band may have released. Nikhil Udupa, part of the marketing and alliance team at NH7.in says, “It’s a fairly casual effort, but it has serious intent. It’s a passion project where we get bands together and get them to do these things themselves.” Comedy rock band Workshop, experimental rock band The Circus and indie/alt rock band Modern Mafia have already signed up to sell merchandize at the show. “It’s a small scene and bands usually have the same audiences, so we need to help each other out,” says Modern Mafia frontman Varun Das, whose band will be selling posters, stickers and CDs for name-your-price purchase.
