The National will release their sixth LP Trouble Will Find Me on May 21st on 4AD. The LP will be their first since 2010’s High Violet.

Talk of an impending new album began earlier this year as the National have slowly filled their schedule with a summer tour ”“ including a homecoming show at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and a slot at Bonnaroo ”“ along with the the April 17th premiere of their new tour documentary Mistaken for Strangers, which was directed by frontman Matt Berninger’s brother Tom, at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Following a 22-month tour behind High Violet (the band’s biggest to date), guitarist Aaron Dessner began sketching out new songs. Though the band had discussed taking time off before recording again, the other musicians proved ready to join him.

“For the past 10 years we’d been chasing something, wanting to prove something,” Berninger said in a statement. “And this chase was about trying to disprove our own insecurities. After touring High Violet, I think we felt like we’d finally gotten there. Now we could relax ”“ not in terms of our own expectations but we didn’t have to prove our identity any longer.”

Recorded at the studio Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, New York, the National self-produced the LP, which was mixed by Craig Silvey, along with Peter Katis and Marcus Paquin.

“It’s free-wheeling again,” said Dessner. “The songs on one level are our most complex, and on another they’re our most simple and human. It just feels like we’ve embraced the chemistry we have.”
