This morning brought sadness with news of the passing of Clarence Gonsalves, bassist with Them Clones. A well-known face on the Indian indie circuit, Gonsalves had also previously played with Joint Family, Level 9,  The Yellow Brick Project and  Red Mawkin among others. Gonsalves had been battling ITP, a blood disorder for a while and seemed to have been past the worst. Unfortunately he passed away in the early hours this morning after being admitted to hospital in New Delhi yesterday.

Tributes are pouring in from the music community across the country. Adil Manuel of Adil & Vasundhara and a friend of Gonsalves said, “Clarence was one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever played with. He was one of those naturals who didn’t have to try too hard. Sometimes we would jam together and I’d show him these complicated jazz chord progressions and even though he was primarily a rock bassist, he’d get it really quickly”.

Update: Them Clones have released an official statement here.
