Watch: Major Lazer’s New Video Lean On
The Jamaican electro-dance hall group releases video shot in India
After an extensive tour of the country last year, the Jamaican electronic dance-hall group Major Lazer has just released a video that is telling of their love for the country. Out just today, the video for their recent single “Lean On,” leans rather heavily on Bollywood films for inspiration.
Assembly line dancers. Check. A set that resembles a palace. Check. A rose petalled bath scene. Check. An elephant on the sets would have ticked off another cliché except it fell asleep during the shoot, tells us Mikhail Mehra, founder of LA-based production house Motion Eccentricá and live event-company Oji, who has co-produced the video with Per Welen and Akshay Multani.
The fact that “Lean On” is a brilliant track and American DJ and producer and his crew comprising American DJ Walshy Fire and Cuban electronica producer Jillionare look absolutely ludicrous while they bust some cheesy Bollywood moves are the video’s redeeming factors. These guys know how to laugh at themselves and do it well, while Danish singer songwriter MØ, who sings the main vocal line, may just have a career in Bollywood anytime she decides to take it up (as an actor of course).
Directed by Swedish video filmmaker Tim Erem and shot at ND Studio in Karjat, near Mumbai, where the Bollywood film Jodha Akbar was shot, the setting looks quite similar to Alsisar Palace in Rajasthan, where the Magnetic Fields Festival 2014 was taking place, at the same time when Major Lazer was touring India.
