New details have emerged about Dave Grohl’s upcoming documentary Sound City, about the famous recording studio of the same name located in Van Nuys, California, reports Variety.”Sound City is a film about America’s greatest unsung recording studio,” said Grohl. “Deep in California’s sun-burnt San Fernando Valley, tucked away behind the train tracks and dilapidated warehouses, it was the birthplace of legend. It was witness to history. It was home to a special few, intent on preserving an ideal.”
Grohl directed and produced the film, and Roswell Films, a branch of Roswell Records, which releases the Foo Fighters’ albums, will distribute it. The doc is being co-produced with Jim Rota, John Ramsay and Therapy studios; Paul Crowder will edit and The Cove and The Tillman Story scribe Mark Monroe will write.
Grohl himself is no stranger to Sound City: it’s where he and Nirvana recorded their breakthrough record Nevermind with Butch Vig in 1991.
In a recent interview with Billboard, Vig said of the film, “[Grohl’s] probably interviewed 150 or 200 people so far, and now we’ve been working on musical collaborations to be a part of the soundtrack for the film.”
He added, “It’s all new things. Rick Springfield came in and played with Dave and Josh (Homme) and Queens of the Stone Age. And we’ve got Corey (Taylor) from Slipknot and Stone Sour and really interesting collaborations. I’m not sure how it’s all going to come together yet, but so far the process has been really, really fun.”
As for a release date, Vig said he’s “hoping that we’ll get it finished and mixed in the fall . . . to have it come out early next year, like January or February or something like that.”Â
