The British pop artist will make her India debut at the OnePlus Music Festival in Mumbai this weekend
With a hot new single just out, Dua Lipa is ready for her second innings. As she preps for her first-ever live performance in India, we look at the five essential tracks that have helped turn Lipa from just another young female pop singer into a global star.
Lipa’s first official single to impact radio in Europe and Australia, the song released there at the end of 2015. The haunting single immediately resonated with listeners becoming her first top 10 hit in numerous countries. Lipa’s voice was welcomed with open arms as unlike many of her contemporaries, the single had more attitude and felt more mature, helping to differentiate Lipa from the lot.
In what would be a tell-tale sign of future collaborations, Lipa was the featured vocalist for Martin Garrix’s synth hit. The single was a runaway success not just on the radio but marked Lipa’s first official Top 40 Hit in the United States. The single also generated over half a billion views on YouTube, indicative of Lipa’s growing popularity, even if on a feature.
After a string of hits in Europe and the rest of the world, “New Rules” became Lipa’s biggest to date. The single helped Lipa officially breakthrough in the U.S. as an artist in her own right and the video has garnered over one billion views and counting. The single wasn’t just a commercial success but also garnered critical acclaim. 2017 was truly Lipa’s breakout year and “New Rules” was most responsible for that.
Riding high on the success of “New Rules,” 2018 felt like Lipa went from artist to star. Her collaboration with Calvin Harris on the blockbuster hit “One Kiss” helped Lipa stay on the radio and in people’s minds. She then collaborated with Silk City (the superstar duo of producers Diplo & Mark Ronson) on “Electricity.” The single went on to be nominated and win the Best Dance Recording award at the Grammys.
After winning two Grammys at the beginning of 2019 (she also won Best New Artist), Lipa needed to find her way musically to avoid the sophomore slump. Reteaming with her “New Rules” production felt like a safe step but the recently released single “Don’t Start Now” while thematically fitting into Lipa’s attitude, musically takes us back to the disco era, becoming one of the funkiest singles of the year.
For Lipa, the sky’s the limit and given how eclectic stylistically her collection already is and how open she has been to collaborate and experiment musically, her voice seems destined for being heard on plenty more future classics to be!
