5 Feel-Good ‘90s Sitcoms To Watch If You Like ‘Friends’

The American situation comedy ruled television screens through the decade

Published by

Friends is among the classic American sitcoms which shaped Indian millennial culture. The show’s availability on Netflix has not only increased its audience but made it into a perfectly binge-able watch. As the most-awaited Friends reunion, titled ‘The One Where They Get back Together,’ is around the corner, we list out five shows that will give you the same cozy feeling as sipping a cuppa on the couch of the iconic Central Perk coffee shop.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Set in the upscale town of Bel-Air, this show takes you on a journey with Will, whose life transformed when he moved from the rough streets of Philadelphia to live with his uncle and aunt in an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles. The witty situations, effortless humour, and a melting pot of charismatic characters and relationship dynamics make this show one of the most iconic American sitcoms. Of course, the extremely catchy theme song helmed by actor-rapper Will Smith is just the cherry on top!

Seinfeld

Often known as the show that inspired Friends, Seinfeld captures the essence of low-brow comedy. It chronicles the misadventures of a rising stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his friends — Kramer, Elaine, and George — in New York. This ‘show about nothing’ takes something mundane about everything from everyday life and turns it into comforting humor, making it a cult classic.

Frasier

Bagging 37 Emmy Awards, Frasier is defined as sitcom perfection. The show’s premise is conveniently straightforward and tracks the life of Dr. Frasier Crane, a haughty celebrity radio-psychiatrist. He finds himself juggling an uppity life among the crème de la crème of Seattle and another mundane one along with his father and brother.

That ‘70s Show

Another cult classic, That ’70s Show, is a Nineties sitcom that is set in the ’70s. And if that’s not interesting enough, it revolves around a group of teenagers who struggle to lead purposeful lives through adolescence. It is spot on with the decade’s fashion, fads and attitudes, and there’s not a single character that will fail to make you laugh.

Will and Grace

Will and Grace explores the friendship between the two best friends Will, a gay lawyer, and Grace, who is a straight interior designer. It’s snappy, energetic, and relevant and throws a net of witty, sarcastic humor over sticky everyday situations.
