Filmmakers have gambled with video game-based movie and TV show adaptations for decades now. A new entry to this list is the District 9 director Neill Blomkamp who will be directing the upcoming Gran Turismo movie. Keeping that theme in mind, here are five adaptions based on popular video games.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Despite the initial criticism, the Super Mario Bros movie starring Chris Pratt has been doing well at the box office, raking in a billion dollars globally so far. A huge improvement from Ninentendo’s first attempt at the Mario movie back in the 90s.

The Last Of Us

A lot of expectations were riding on HBO’s live-action adaptation of the iconic video game franchise, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. After nearly half a dozen critically acclaimed episodes, it’s safe to say the expectations have paid off, with a second season already in the works.

Uncharted 

The Tom Holland movie may not have reached the popularity of its video game adaptation, but the 2022 movie, nonetheless, makes for a fun action-adventure watch over a slow weekend.

Sonic The Hedgehog

Perhaps one of the biggest gambles in recent years, the bet on the two Sonic movies seems to have paid off, with favourable reviews from critics and fans alike.
