Mumbai/Toronto hip-hop artist FeniFina.

Footballers, childhood friends, fellow rappers and more hype up FeniFina in the music video for her latest single “Get Better,” shot and edited by Rekoil Chafe, who also serves as producer for the track.

On her first release of the year, FeniFina introduces Hindi and English verses (the latter for the first time) as she sings about motivations and changes she’s seen (and made) in her life over time. The music video transports viewers straight to heart of FeniFina’s hood in Andheri West. “It’s in my area where I live and by my school,” she says over a phone call.

The making of “Get Better” with Rekoil Chafe came at a time when FeniFina spent six months in Mumbai, the longest back home following her permanent move to Canada for studies and work. During this time in India, she brought back a chorus that she’d written in around 2018 and 2019 and got to work with Chafe in the studio to give shape to “Get Better” through the course of a few sessions.

She says, “I think being in India and being in Bombay, for that time, working with creatives who have been there created the scene from 10 years ago, 12 years ago when I was just in Canada. I think that really opened my eyes to just creating music in a way that’s going to connect to the larger audience and is relatable in a way.” Batting for self-motivation and good energy, the Hindi-English rap song digs right into its life-affirming hook, spurring listeners to be the best version of themselves despite all the difficulties the world presents. “There’s always something bad things happening, whether that’s outside or even in our personal lives, which is why I try to make self-motivational and inspirational music,” FeniFina says.

The song allowed the artist to make references to her love for football and the importance of sustainable fashion. There are references to tackling (“I was very good at tackling, that’s how I was able to get on the team in school and go play at the district level,” the artist says) and how she’s not one to support fast fashion. “My styling is always done by me. Even the clothes are designed by me which is why I’m like, ‘Kapde naa khareedte mall se’ (I don’t buy clothes from the mall) because I literally designed those clothes and they’re made in Bombay,” she adds.

While “Get Better” is also a look back at how much has changed for FeniFina, she does talk about how much is changing with each release. The follow-up to her 2022 single “Kyu,” the rapper says she’s looking forward to make the best of both worlds as a desi artist in Toronto and as a Mumbai-bred artist in India. It admittedly gets a bit difficult to promote songs in India when she’s not around to perform, but FeniFina says she’s lining up gigs in Toronto and Canada at the moment.
