The remix for "Desi Trill" brings Yung Sammy (far right) to add a verse on the original by DJ LYAN, Chip and Malkit Singh.

The end of October saw the launch of “Desi Trill,” the first single from the newly launched platform and self-proclaimed movement DESI TRILL MUSIC – founded by TY-TY Smith (from entertainment company Roc Nation) and South Asian-origin British artist Shabz – as a way to combine hip-hop and South Asian sounds. The song, featuring their signee DJ LYAN, U.K. rapper Chip and Punjabi vocalist Malkit Singh, now gets a remix featuring one of desi hip-hop’s hungriest rappers, Yung Sammy.

The Nigerian-origin, Delhi NCR-based artist adds a Hindi verse in his typically desi way while keeping the spotlight on the quick-paced original mix, which uses the hook from the classic Punjabi song “Gud Naal.” The video, for its part, retains the footage of Chip, DJ LYAN and Singh in London – including a shoot in a convenience store – and the lens travels to Yung Sammy somewhere in India for his verse that woos a girl as he peppers a Bollywood reference to keep things globally relevant.

Yung Sammy is now signed to DESI TRILL MUSIC, which has Universal Music Group as their global partner. DJ LYAN was earlier announced as the first signee on the label side of things, with an eye on collaborating with multiple artists.

Sammy says about the recent developments in a statement, “The collaboration with DESI TRILL was unexpected. I dropped the song ‘4×4’ and it got viral on Instagram reels and that’s when I came across Mr. Shabz and TY TY Smith. When they told me about their vision, I was bowled, this was something different. And now we are out with the first track which is ‘DESI TRILL REMIX’ with DJ LYAN, Malkit Singh, featuring me in their remix which is doing good. There are few things lined up and I can see that the family is growing. I love the platform DESI TRILL has provided for me.”

DJ LYAN, for his part, said in an earlier statement about being part of the DESI TRILL movement, “I want people to consider me next to DJ Snake, Calvin Harris, DJ Khaled, Pharrell Williams… I hope that South Asian music can be on a level playing field and that I can be the one to do this.”

Smith and Shabz began working on DESI TRILL on the back of being friends for about 25 years. The ultimate goal was to build a movement that would create a legacy, much like hip-hop, which is now 50 years in. Shabz told Rolling Stone India in an interview, “This is a sound, this is a movement so we thought who best to create this with than a DJ? That’s DJ LYAN. He’s of Indian/Bangladeshi descent, a young kid coming out of London. His whole sound is hip-hop but he’s playing with South Asian heritage sounds organically already. He just needed to reach that tipping point to make it DESI TRILL. He’s a force to be known with.”

Yung Sammy has been making inroads to the U.K. in addition to DESI TRILL, working with Indian-origin music producer duo Memba on their recent single “Mehndi.” The collaboration also had its live debut at Bacardi NH7 Weekender last week in Pune, when Memba brought Yung Sammy on stage as part of their set.
