When The Wilds debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2020, the survivalist drama took the world by storm. Particularly because it focused on a group of diverse, teenage girls who were stranded on a deserted island much like the unlucky folks on Lost. Except season one revealed that their plane crash was no accident at all but a step in a controlled experiment. As season two premieres, we delve into the world of The Wilds and its characters through music. Here are the songs that’ll acquaint you with the lives of the eight strong protagonists who steer the riveting story of The Wilds:

  1. Leah Rilke — “Cold Day In The Sun” by Foo Fighters

Submerged into the recesses of her mind and its memories, Leah Rilke (Sarah Pidgeon) is a soul of titanium contending with the waves of time. As she tries to leave the past behind, she feels like she’s alone in her battle with the world as she tries to piece herself together after a devastating breakup. The Foo Fighters’ “Cold Day In The Sun” is the perfect song to understand the character as it outlines a person’s struggle to save themselves from themselves. The track helps us understand the teenager better.

  1. Fatin Jadmani — “You Should See Me In A Crown” by Billie Eilish

Fatin Jadmani (Sophia Ali) is the queen. Periodt. She’s assertive, knows what she wants and she isn’t afraid to go after it. Vulnerable and steely strong, Fatin has had to fight for every inch of freedom she enjoys and that reflects in how she cherishes herself and her life. Billie Eilish’s “You Should See Me In a Crown” could easily be Fatin’s anthem, her roaring call to the world to bow down because the universe is hers. If there’s one we could all learn from Fatin, it’s how to wear killer confidence after all.

  1. Rachel Reid — “MOTOMAMI” by Rosalía

Rachel Reid (Reign Edwards) is used to being number one in whatever she does. An ace diver, the athlete is always competing against herself to do her personal best. Rosalía’s “MOTOMAMI” is the perfect hype song for a girl like Rachel who never backs down and always pushes the bar. There’s no obstacle that Rachel has turned away from and she faces her every demon even when it’s pretty damn frustrating. Inspiring and heartbreaking, Rachel is a character that stays with you because of her sheer grit and determination.

  1. Nora Reid — “Don’t Feel Like Crying” by Sigrid

Nora Reid (Helena Howard) is an old soul with a sensitive and empathetic heart. She seeks the good in situations and in people. She has her own unique way of loving and healing which is exemplified in a song like like Sigrid’s “Don’t Feel Like Crying.” Nora has no set of rules for how she wants to live her life; she’s a free soul and she subverts convention. An artist of life, Nora is always observing and absorbing the world around her; she’s no mere spectator. In her art, she is as free as she is when she occupies her space in this mad world.

  1. Shelby Goodkind — “Killer Queen” by Queen

Shelby Goodkind (Mia Healey) has worn a crown plenty of times. A pageant queen, the teenager is well versed with what it takes to clinch first place in a crowd of many. Trained to be perfect in every possible way, Shelby finds herself shackled to the ideals and conventions of the world. “Killer Queen” by Queen is then a song that narrates the sad outer reality of someone who is yearning to break free and just be herself. As Shelby discovers and accepts herself throughout the first season of The Wilds, we learn that there’s more to people than meets the eye — or what their Instagram reveals.

Dot Campbell’s (Shannon Berry) life has been anything but easy. Between juggling bills and caring for her ailing father, Dot has had her work mapped out but this woman is tough as nails and isn’t willing to bow down to the sentence life has served her. “Asal Hustle” by Naezy is then a mirror to her realities as she tries to make the best of a rough situation and come out on top of it. Dot is practical and headstrong; she’s a leader who can weather any storm no matter how bad. If you’re in a hard space, you can be assured that Dot has your back.

  1. Martha Blackburn — “I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado

Martha Blackburn (Jenna Clause) is a kind, trusting soul who wears her heart on her sleeve. Upfront and vocal about her beliefs, she’s a symbol of hope and strength in a world that’s aching to strip her of her identity. “I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado is then a song that encapsulates Martha’s gentleness and innocence. A voice of reason and change, Martha is a humane force of nature that always looks out for the better of others and is a true friend if anyone is in need. Still finding herself, Martha is a work in progress but rest assured that she’s a masterpiece.

  1. Toni Shalifoe — “Heroes” by David Bowie

Toni Shalifoe (Erana James) is hot-headed but she means well. Strong with a no-nonsense personality, Toni is a fighter who refuses to settle for less than what she wants and deserves. “Heroes” by David Bowie is then a song about how Toni overcomes the odds and wars with the world for her choices, freedom and existence. A girl with the spirit of a lion, Toni is a fierce and loyal confidante and friend who always has your back, no matter what. She’s sturdy in a storm and is a person who will compel you to rethink the true meaning of strength.
