A Webtoon Sequel Is Coming Ahead of ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2

'Gyeongseong Creature: The Unwithering Flower,' the webtoon sequel to 'Gyeongseong Creature,' will launch on January 20, as announced by Kakao Entertainment

Gyeongseong Creature distills the sinister and catastrophic facets of solid monster fiction in a morbid period piece utilizing the Japanese rule of Korea in the spring of 1945. Presented like a film, it recalls the grisly tale of a beast born out of avarice and devious schemes—an epic saga of love, loyalty, and relationships striving to survive through fear, tension, and obscurity.

The web series’ finale left us with questions and cliffhangers, more so in the post-credit scenes, driving our appetite for a second season, thanks to Netflix confirming a season 2 coming soon earlier yesterday, January 8. Ahead of that, Kakao Entertainment revealed its webtoon sequel, Gyeongseong Creature: The Unwithering Flower, to be launched on January 20.

Three days following its premiere, Gyeongseong Creature was placed number one in the Korean market and third in Netflix‘s Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) category. Sources claimed that India was one of the several nations that ranked the series among the Top 10.

In Gyeongseong (an earlier name for Seoul), Gyeongseong Creature follows Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon) and Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee) as they must solve puzzles and face an incomprehensible monster amid the Japanese rule of Korea. Renowned Tae-sang is a pawn shop owner. His keen perception, quick reflexes, and charisma make him an influential player in the area.

Chae-ok is a distinguished sleuth on the other side who specializes in locating missing people. She had to endure an uphill battle as a child, and circumstances led her to learn and master operating machinery, using knives, and shooting targets. A decade ago, Chae-ok’s mother vanished. Growing up, she visits Gyeongseong in a quest to find her, where she encounters Tae-sang.

While we see a rocky start between them, the equation quickly evolves as they join forces to uncover facts. Their only requirement of each other is that the other survive, come what may. There are yet more layers to unravel in the second installment while baffling details come to light in the first. Season 2 should debut this year, I hope. But we have Gyeongseong Creature: The Unwithering Flower in the interim.

Korea JoongAng Daily reports that the central character in Gyeongseong Creature: The Unwithering Flower, Geum-ran, undergoes a genetic change that endows her with advanced intelligence. Together with her partner, Byeong-gil, she fights an evil scheme. To connect the webtoon sequel to the web series, characters from the latter, including Chae-ok and the malevolent General Kato (Choi Young-jun), are to make appearances. Adds the piece—a statement from Kakao Entertainment has disclosed that the action will take place on the fictitious land of Manwol-do, an independent setting from the original drama.
