Actor You Need to Know: Kim Yoojung

The unstoppable Kim Yoojung is one of the youngest Korean actresses to make it to the list of top K-drama heroines

Her debut in the South Korean entertainment industry came with the action-adventure series Iljimae and the historical drama Painter of the Wind, for which she won the ‘Best Child Actress’ in 2008. The budding actor then proceeded to make a name for herself starring in several television shows in 2010, including Dong Yi, Flames of Desire, and Grudge: The Revolt of Gumiho where she did an exemplary job switching characters from an innocent youngster ‘Yeon Yi’ and a devilish gumiho, the nine-tailed fox.

Kim evolved into a well-rounded performer, accruing accolades over time. She had already become a household name in South Korea as a child actor, but her break came with the fantasy period drama The Moon Embracing the Sun, in which she co-starred with Yeo Jingoo alongside Kim Soohyun and Han Gain. Because of the show’s phenomenal success, it was elevated to the status of ‘National Drama’, and Kim Yoojung was voted the ‘Best Young Actress’ in both the first ‘K-drama Star Awards’ and the 2012 ‘MBC Drama Awards.’

After this, there was no looking back for the May Queen actor, who also appeared in the 2013 film Commitment and the family drama Golden Rainbow in the same year. She received critical acclaim the following year for her performance as a teen bully in Thread of Lies followed by roles in several shows, including Room 731, a horror mystery, and Secret Door, a period drama.

After starring in multiple critically acclaimed historical dramas, Kim has earned the nicknames ‘Nation’s Little Sister’ and ‘Sageuk fairy’

In 2015 Kim appeared in the television series Angry Mom, featured in the web series Love Cells, and also acted in the film Circle of Atonement. Her lead role in the youth historical drama Love in the Moonlight with park Bogum in 2016 received great reviews with the show becoming a superhit in that its popularity was termed as ‘Moonlight Syndrome’. In 2017, she co-starred alongside Cha Taehyun in the romantic comedy film Because I Love You followed by a lead role in the romantic comedy Clean with Passion for Now in 2018.

For 2020’s Backstreet Rookie, in which Kim co-starred with Ji Changwook, she won the ‘Excellence Award’ for ‘Actress in a Miniseries Fantasy/Romance Drama’ category. Later, she played ‘Hong Chunggi,’ the Joseon dynasty’s sole female painter, in the historical fantasy drama Lovers of the Red Sky, alongside Ahn Hyoseop. The series was a hit, winning a couple of accolades at the 2021 ‘SBS Drama Awards.’ In addition, the 22-year-old starred as Ae Ran; the girl with a secret in the mystery thriller film The 8th Night directed by Kim Taehyoung, plus made a cameo appearance in the television series One Ordinary Day.

Bang Woori’s upcoming film 20th Century Girl will see Kim Yoojung, Byeon Wooseok, Park Jungwoo, and Roh Yoonseo. The series is set in 1999 and highlights friendship and the thrills of first love. It is slated to release on Netflix this year.
