Adam Driver Burns Rubber and Bridges in Michael Mann’s ‘Ferrari’ Trailer

In theaters December 25, Ferrari also stars Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gordon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O'Connell, and Patrick Dempsey

The only thing missing from the official teaser trailer for Michael Mann’s Ferrari is an obscenely loud Charli XCX hyperpop song about driving fast and being hot — but that song actually ended up in Barbie. But Ferrari does have Adam Driver slipping into the persona of a troubled Italian man once again. This time, he’s traded the fashion world of House of Gucci for the fast-tracked life of Formula 1 racer Enzo Ferrari.

The minute-and-a-half-long trailer is a suspense (and anxiety) building introduction to the chaos of Ferrari’s personal life. Off the road, during the summer of 1957, the driver is facing the potential shutdown of the factory he built with his wife Laura (Penélope Cruz) as the threat of bankruptcy looms.

Then there’s the matter of his marriage itself beginning to crumble as the couple continues to feel the loss of their son, Dino, while Ferrari tries to ignore the existence of his other son, Piero, with Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley).

And Ferrari still has a team of drivers counting on him. “If you get into one of my cars, you get in to win,” he states in the trailer, delivering the only line of spoken dialogue in the entire clip. While he navigates chaos in his own life, both he and his drivers race toward the edge as they embark on the Mille Miglia, a 1,000-mile race across Italy.

In theaters on Dec. 25, Ferrari also stars Sarah Gordon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey. Troy Kennedy Martin wrote the film based on the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine, written by Brock Yates. The film will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on Aug. 31.
