Album was third-fastest to have achieved the milestone
Adele’s 21 has reached a new milestone, becoming the 21st album to sell more than 10 million copies since Nielsen SoundScan began keeping track in 1991.
It took the English singer’s second album 92 weeks to reach 10 million, which qualifies 21 for diamond status from the Recording Industry Association of America. The last release to sell as many copies in a shorter time frame was ’N Sync’s 2000 album No Strings Attached, which needed 43 weeks to sell 10 million. Backstreet Boys’Â 1999 smash Millennium did it in 29 weeks.
Adele’s is the third album to reach sales of 10 million copies this year, following Linkin Park’s 2000 LP Hybrid Theory and Usher’s 2004 release Confessions.
