Adele’s ‘Hello’ Tops 1 Million Downloads in Opening Week

Adele’s new single “Hello“ had a record-shattering week on the charts as the 25 introductory track sold 1.11 million digital copies in its debut week in the U.S., making it the first single ever to rack up over 1 million downloads in its first week of release. The platinum week also pushed “Hello” to a Number One debut on the Billboard Hot 100.

As Billboard reports, Adele picked up where her charts-dominating 21 left off as “Hello” easily cruised past Flo Rida’s “Right Round” as the most downloaded song in one week; while “Hello” racked up over 1,112,000 downloads, Flo Rida’s now-second-bestselling week maxed out at 636,000. “Hello” became Adele’s fourth single to top the Hot 100, following 21‘s “Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain” and “Someone Like You.”

On Billboard‘s Streaming Songs chart ”“ which tracks U.S. streams over a variety of different mediums, including YouTube and streaming services ”“ “Hello” chalked up 61 million streams in one week. It’s a solid total, but far behind Baauer’s 103 million streams for “Harlem Shake” (which was bolstered by countless parody videos utilizing that track). “Hello” also scored a record 20 million streams on on-demand services.

Adele and Lionel Richie have separately joked about the similarities between their respective “Hello” singles, and now the tracks have one more thing in common: Number One spots on the Hot 100. Fittingly, they’re the only two songs titled simply “Hello” to hit the top spot.
