‘Dragon Ball’ Creator Akira Toriyama Has Passed Away at 68
A statement from the artist’s Bird Studio said he passed away due to an acute subdural hematoma on March 1st

Manga creator Akira Toriyama, behind the long-running series Dragon Ball died on March 1st, an official statement has confirmed.
The mangaka had been active for 45 years as a creative force in the Dragon Ball world and his earlier manga series Dr. Slump, among other projects including character design for video games like Dragon Quest and Blue Dragon.
A statement from the official Dragon Ball website released by his Bird Studio added that Toriyama, 68, passed away due to an “acute subdural hematoma.” The statement said, “It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also, he would have many more things to achieve.”
The statement said, “We hope that the world of Akira Toriyama’s unique works will continue to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.”
Dragon Ball was first serialized in 1984, steadily making the Nagoya-born Toriyama one of the most loved manga creators of all time. The manga gained even more global fame after being adapted into anime series such as Dragon Ball Z in the late Eighties.
