There’s a new music festival getting added to the gig calendar next month, and they’re bringing the heavy-hitters from Indian indie. Alboe by the Beach festival – taking place from February 9th to 11th at Varkala Beach – will host hip-hop artists like Brodha V, Hanumankind, Arivu and Baby Jean alongside indie favorites like The F16s and Taba Chake.

The three-day festival’s inaugural edition also features Bengaluru-based acts like fusion/rock band Pineapple Express, space-rock band Space Is All We Have, singer-songwriters Frizzell D’Souza, Mary Ann and hip-hop artist Reble. Chennai-based artists like Sunflower Tape Machine, rapper Paal Dabba, Wayanad-based rock band Matadoria, Ernakulam indie artist Jeremiah de Rozario, Kerala hip-hop artist MC Couper and DJ Paloma are among more than 20 artists set to perform at Alboe by the Beach.

Positioned as a beach carnival near Thiruvananthapuram with music at its center, the festival also intends to tick the boxes when it comes to music event essentials – from art installations designed by local artists to food stalls and a curated flea market that focuses on indigenous art and handicrafts. Being an event that takes place by the water, the festival promises beach games for attendees as well.

Alboe By the Beach’s founder Vishnu Shyamaprasad said in a statement, “Homegrown contemporary music festivals have sprung up across India, covering folk to electronica, jazz to indie, but we still didn’t have a music festival on the beach, and Kerala afforded us the perfect opportunity with its stunning coastal line and talent.” He adds, “We envisioned the festival as a platform to highlight the country’s incredible musical talent, which often is under-represented and also introduce people to the Kerala’s cultural heritage in a fun-filled environment like an experiential festival.”

Tickets for the three-day beach festival are priced at upwards of ₹1,049 for a daily pass (although early bird tickets are now sold out) and ₹2,099 for the whole weekend, plus a VIP festival pass for ₹5,299.
