Annarasumanara aka The Sound of Magic is a fantasy-music-psychological K-drama directed by Kim Seongyoon and written by Kim Minjeong. The show is based on Ha IIkwon’s webtoon of the same name, starring South Korean superstar Ji Changwook in the lead role, alongside Choi Sungeun and Hwang Inyeop. Yoon Ayi (Choi), a schoolgirl who wants to grow up quickly, and Lee Eul (Ji), a magician who wants to remain a child, are at the center of the six-episode musical drama.

The story begins with a rumor that has been circulating for days about Lee, a wizard who lives near an abandoned theme park. He is reputed to possess incredible magical abilities, and some even believe his magic is real. Lee’s signature style includes asking his audience, “Do you believe in magic?”

On the other hand, we have Yoon, a high-school girl whose interest in magic has waned over time. Her parents have long abandoned her, with the debt-ridden father sneaking out to avoid loan sharks and her mother leaving soon after. Yoon is thus responsible for her younger sister, who lives with her, and the household chores as well. Her severe conditions, however, have had little effect on her studies. She is hardworking and a good student at school. At the same time, her hardships have made her exceedingly pragmatic, and she no longer believes in magic’s miracles. All she wants is to grow up fast and secure a stable job.

In certain ways, Yoon and her classmate, Na Ildeung (Hwang), belong to the same school of thought. He is skeptical of magic and was raised to believe that a good education is the only key to success and a happy life. As a result, he is constantly vying with Yoon for higher grades. But their rapport takes a turn for the better and gradually develops into romance as the narrative progresses.

One day, Yoon’s life is drastically transformed when she walks into the abandoned theme park and chances upon Lee, the magician. Her perspective on life shifts, and she decides to pursue her passion and happiness. Annarasumanara is a moving and inspiring story about growing up and being the person you want to be. It’s a beautiful message about seeking happiness through faith in one’s dreams.

After a long gap post-Lovestruck in the City, Ji is returning with a host of new projects this year, Annarasumanara being the first in line. The Netflix Original is slated for release on May 6th, 2022.
