The latest from the Punjabi-Canadian artist brings in the U.K. heavyweight for a hip-hop banger
Punjabi-Canadian artist AP Dhillon and U.K. grime star Stormzy dropped a glittering, resolute new song “Problems Over Peace” via Mass Appeal India today.
The song, which was teased just yesterday, lives up to the hype in terms of each artist playing to their strengths as rappers. Dhillon brings his Punjabi hip-hop style that was heard on his previous single “Real Talk” with Shinda Kahlon, out in March.
But it’s Stormzy’s voice that welcomes listeners in on “Problems Over Peace,” setting the scene by talking about how this song is where Punjab meets South London. In both their verses, AP Dhillon and Stormzy ward off the haters with warnings and friendly reminders alike about their status, worth and skill. “They ask if I want peace, I want problems,” Stormzy raps. The song has shared producer duties between Theskybeats aka Frederik Thrane (whose credits include Bad Bunny, Joyner Lucas and Lil Tecca) and YenEuroDollar, who has also worked with Lucas, Youngboy NBA and Rich The Kid.
AP and Stormzy’s “Problem Over Peace” comes just nine days ahead of the Punjabi star’s hotly anticipated debut at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in in California on April 14th. Dhillon will return for a second set at the festival on April 21st. Other Indian-origin artists on the Coachella lineup include singer-songwriter Sid Sriram and Punjabi-Canadian artist NAV. Stormzy, for his part, made his debut at Coachella back in 2017 and called it “one of the best shows I’ve played” at the time.
Dhillon has rarely had international collaborations on this scale, so “Problems Over Peace” might be his big play towards bringing more audiences into Punjabi music. He told Rolling Stone India in his cover story interview last year, I’m just putting myself out there […] This is the time for fans—the whole world—to get to know me. And not just me, but the whole team.”
