Over 100,000 apps are now available exclusively for the Apple iPad and iPad 2, marking yet another major milestone for the pioneering touchscreen tablet PC.
Reached in just 453 days, as compared to the 482 days it took the iPhone to generate the same number of applications, it’s an impressive feat for the mobile device, which launched in April 2010. Despite supporting many of the 400,000+ apps available through the App Store, developers have been quick to produce new dedicated apps for the device which take advantage of the greater visual real estate it provides.
Representing roughly 90% of all tablet PC shipments, the iPad enjoys a massive lead over rival platforms, though Android tablets are expected to soon play catch-up. But no true “iPad killer” has yet to emerge in terms of critical acclaim or commercial sales numbers, with applications for tablet PCs powered by the Android operating system currently numbering in the hundreds.
Reports place the current number of apps currently available strictly for the iPad and iPad 2 at somewhere north of 100,161 applications. Over 10 billion apps have been downloaded in total from the App Store in just two and a half years.
