Vocalist-guitarist Uddipan Sarmah says Aswekeepsearching’s upcoming set is an hour and 40 minutes long, but we know there’s a high chance the Pune-based post-rock band will be asked for an encore. “We have a lot of songs left if that happens, but I don’t think our bodies will survive,” Sarmah says with a laugh.

The band has a short four-city run of shows this week, which kicks off on May 15th at Flea Bazaar Café in Mumbai, followed by shows in New Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru. The “USP” – as Sarmah calls – is a pre-decided public setlist that the band has put together. This includes staples such as “B-303,” “Kalga” and “In Circles,” but also a rare performance of songs like “The Tattva” (from their debut release Growing Suspicions) and the live debut of “Uns” off 2017’s Zia. There’s also two new songs – “Chasing Light” and “Rooh” – taken from their nearly finished forthcoming third full-length. Sarmah says, “We’ve played ‘The Tattva’ in 2014 but we never touched it after that. We’re changing it a bit now.”

The shows – minus a crowdfunded gig in Kolkata that didn’t meet its target – were put together just under a month ago. Sarmah recalls, “I was in an auto going from Andheri to Bandra and by the time I got to Bandra, the tour was locked.” Of course, he says this is because Aswekeepsearching has been away from the stage for a few months. “It might be comfortable now, but you never know.”

With the album nearly completed, the band will head to showcase festival and conference The Indian Ocean Music Market IOMMA in Reunion Island from June 3rd to June 6th. It came about after the band’s performance at Chennai’s festival-conference IndiEarth Xchange in 2016. Sarmah says, “Then we come back and shoot music videos and content for the next album.”
