Often hailed as one of India’s original rappers, there’s comedic value and heart in the artist’s five-city run of shows
With just a DJ, backing tracks and a mic, Baba Sehgal brought his decades-running legacy of heartful hip-hop and Indian pop to Bengaluru on September 15th, at the kickoff gig of his No Bullsh*t club tour.
While nothing sells like nostalgia (sample: tours by Backstreet Boys to UB40’s Ali Campbell and Westlife to Ronan Keating), Sehgal is an absolute entertainer who never lets the energy flag, whether it’s singalongs or post-gig fan meets and keenly signing autographs.
Put together by music agency BandEdge, Sehgal’s No Bullsh*t tour travels to Hyderabad (September 22nd), Bhopal (September 23rd), Indore (September 24th) and Pune (September 30th) this month. Ahead of the tour, Sehgal wrote to Rolling Stone India about the prep, calling it “excitement at its peak.” He adds in an email interview, “[I] love interacting with crowd and especially with new age crowd[s] who are my fans and who know the lyrics of my old and new songs […] Doing five gigs back to back is a challenge for me and like we say always – the show must go on.”
For Sehgal, he wants to give a show that’s “full of emotions and nostalgia.” He says, “I never take my audience for granted and always have something peppy and interesting for them.” For anyone attending his show for the first time, he promises a “power-packed performance with new sound.” He adds with a laugh, “And [a] new Baba Sehgal!”
Following the shows in September, Sehgal says there are more gigs coming up, plus campaigns revolving around T.V. show and podcast appearances, among other things.
