Bae Suzy as Yumi in the Coupang Play Original ‘Anna’

Suzy's role as Anna is probably one of her most demanding portrayals to date, although she thrives in the role thanks to her unique capacity for acting

The kernel of all that happens here is a lie, an innocuous act that has an enormous bearing on Yumi’s life—corresponding to the Coupang Play original series Anna—an intense drama by director Lee Joo-young starring Bae Suzy (aka Suzy) as Yumi, an individual with Ripley’s syndrome. She lies, slips into a different identity, and starts functioning as Anna, only to endanger her own existence.

Ji Hun (Kim Joon-han) is Yumi’s opportunistic husband. Yumi feels secure only with Ji Won (Park Ye-young), her close friend, while she also has an odd connection with posh, elitist Hyun Joo (Jung Eun-chae).

In a certain way, the synopsis is reminiscent of the American psychological suspense thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley, where the titular Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) visits Italy to persuade the ultra-rich Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) to head back to America. While Dickie’s lavish living drives Tom nuts, Tom makes titanic attempts to emulate him.

Because of Tom Ripley’s character’s immense appeal, the psychological disorder identified as Ripley’s syndrome, which typically manifests as self-interest, erratic emotions, and an absence of sympathy, among other characteristics, was named after him. I guess there are a few parallels between Yumi and Tom.

Given that Anna sheds her true self and inhabits a world that isn’t hers, the psychological narrative’s gloom is tangible and unmistakably alludes to her complex situation.

Suzy’s role as Anna could be one of her most demanding portrayals to date, although she thrives in the role thanks to her unique capacity for acting.

Anna is available on Coupang Play.
