BarbieOppenheimerSuccession, and The Bear all picked up a slew of nominations as the contenders for the 2024 Golden Globes were announced Monday, Dec. 11.

Barbie led all film nominees with nine, including nods for Best Director (Greta Gerwig), Actress (Margot Robbie), and Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling). Oppenheimer followed close behind with eight, also picking up nominations for Director (Christopher Nolan), Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey, Jr.), and Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt).

Both will compete for Best Motion Picture, though in separate categories. Barbie will be in the Musical or Comedy category, alongside AirAmerican FictionThe HoldoversMay Decemberand Poor Things. And in Drama, Oppenheimer will compete against Anatomy of a FallKillers of the Flower MoonMaestroPast Livesand The Zone of Interest.

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon picked up seven nominations, as did Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. One of the strongest showings was Past LivesCeline Song’s celebrated romantic drama, which earned five nominations, Best Director for Song and Best Actress for star Greta Lee.

Over in television, Succession unsurprisingly dominated the field, picking up nine nominations for its final season. The show is up for Best Television Series – Drama, against 1923The Last of UsThe CrownThe Diplomatand The Morning ShowNumerous members of its ensemble cast also picked up acting noms, including Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, Brian Cox, Alan Ruck Matthew Macfadyen, Alexander Skarsgård, and J. Smith-Cameron.

Meanwhile, The Bear and Only Murders in the Building earned five nominations each, and they’ll both compete in the Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy category against BarryAbbott ElementaryJury Duty, and Ted LassoThe Bear stars Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Abby Elliott all picked up acting noms, as did Only Murders’  Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Meryl Streep.

Earlier this year, Dick Clark Productions purchased the Golden Globes, and all its assets, from the scandal-plagued Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The acquisition signaled a “winddown” (as it was put in a statement at the time) of the HFPA and its membership, with the Globes transitioning from a non-profit enterprise to a commercial one. Dick Clark Productions is owned by Rolling Stone’s parent company, Penske Media Corporation, in partnership with the holding company Eldridge

For decades, the Globes and the HFPA had faced accusations of vote fixing, bribery, and other shady dealings. Brendan Fraser also accused former HFPA president Philip Berk of groping him at a 2003 event, a claim Berk denied (an official investigation found that Berk had “inappropriately touched” Fraser, but “evidence support that it was intended to be taken as a joke”). Berk was later expelled from the HFPA after sending an email to members in which he quoted an article calling Black Lives Matter a “racist hate movement.” This was revealed not long after a damning Los Angeles Times investigation that revealed the HPFA had no Blackvoting members until that year.

The 2021 uproar prompted NBC to drop the Golden Globes telecast for 2022, but the show returned to the airwaves earlier this year. The sale to Dick Clark Productions was announced a few months later, in June.

The 2024 Golden Globes will take place on Jan. 7, airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
