Nils Hoffman goes to high school by day and DJs at some of Europe’s best known clubs such as Weekend  in Berlin, Showcase in Paris or Pratersauna in Vienna by night. The Berlin-based deep house producer, who will play in Mumbai this weekend, creates an interesting blend of soft and what he calls “emotional house”, inspired by the music of the Sixties and lists indie artists such as Trentemöller, Bon Iver and Yann Tiersen as his influences.

“Balloons,” the first single that he ever released in 2012 made it to Beatport’s Top 100, with a over a million YouTube hits. The 18-year-old, who was signed onto Get Physical Music/Seleensauna, which has the electro superstars such as Booka Shade and Catz ”˜N Dogz on its roster, tells us that his work ethic is quite simple: “You really have to want it. I’ve been doing this for almost two years now, so I’ve learned how to manage it while also going to school. I think that if you have discipline, then you can.” The producer began playing music when he was six years old, starting off on the piano and then later experimented with drums and cello.

Hoffman who released his debut EP Verwunschen in 2012 hopes to be pleasantly surprised at the Mumbai show. It’s interesting to note though that an artist, whose brand of warm, organic electronica which is more suited for a day at the park or a train journey to work, was selected as a headlining act for a Saturday night event. Especially taking into consideration the bass heavy acts, Qwiver and Orbs & Zen, that will precede him. Says Hoffman, “I’m really excited about the trip because it’s my first visit [to India]. Also, I’ve never played out of Europe before. I don’t know so much about the electronic music scene over there, I heard that it’s still growing but I have no idea because it’s so far away.” Hoffman flies back to Berlin soon after his weekend show in Mumbai to make it in time for school on Monday, but he’s booked every weekend after to perform in clubs across Europe including gigs in Germany and Switzerland. Now, that’s what you call taking the party to the next level.
