Beyonce Pens Tribute to Officers Killed in Dallas Shooting

Beyoncé has issued an emphatic open letter on police killings of black men and women, writing, “The war on people of color and all minorities needs to be over.”

Beyoncé has penned a tribute to the five Dallas police officers that were killed by a gunman while patrolling a protest Thursday. In the Instagram post, the singer also revealed she was praying for those officers injured in the shooting and reiterated that violence isn’t the answer.

“Rest in peace to the officers whose lives were senselessly taken yesterday in Dallas,” Beyoncé wrote. “I am praying for a full recovery of the seven others injured. No violence will create peace. Every human life is valuable. We must be the solution. Every human being has the right to gather in peaceful protest without suffering more unnecessary violence.”

The tribute accompanied a short black-and-white video of the Texas flag in the wind intercut with the names of the five officers who were killed Thursday: Brent Thompson, Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Lorne Ahrens.

“To effect change we must show love in the face of hate and peace in the face of violence,” Beyoncé added.

Earlier in the week, Beyoncé commented on the deaths of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge and Philando Castile outside the Twin Cities of Minnesota, two men killed in separate police shootings.

“We are sick and tired of the killings of young men and women in our communities,” the note begins against a black background. “It is up to us to take a stand and demand that they ‘stop killing us.’ We don’t need sympathy. We need everyone to respect our lives.”

On Thursday night, during Beyoncé’s concert in Glasgow, Scotland, the singer also paused for a moment of silence for Castile and Sterling as well as all those killed in instances of police brutality.
