Beyonce Talks Artistry and Family in New, Rare Interview
“I no longer have to work based on someone else’s expectations or pressure,” singer says.
Beyoncé gave a rare interview to Garage Magazine, which can be accessed for free via its app. In the interactive cover story spread, which features photos of Beyoncé in vibrant collage artwork created by Urs Fischer, the singer discusses art and artistry, both her own and others, as well as the important roles her family plays in her life.
In the story, Beyoncé said she is drawn to painting and photography. “There’s a release and an immediacy there that helps me escape from my other projects.” As far as some of her favorite artists, she lists Kara Walker, Tracey Emin, Aaron Young, Ed Ruscha and Donald Judd. “My mother is a huge art collector and she always encouraged me from a young age to invest in art,” she said. “I travel a lot and I love going to art galleries and museums in different cities with my family and friends.”
Her family takes center stage when it comes to the people who play important roles in her life. She said her mother, Tina Knowles, is her biggest hero. “She has taught me about caring for others, working hard and working smart,” she said. “Everything I know about being a mother comes from examples she has shown. My mother has instilled confidence in my sister and me and taught us to always be grateful.” She added that her proudest moment was when she gave birth to her daughter, Blue Ivy.
She also gave a shout-out to What Will It Take To Make a Woman President? by Marianne Schnall, which the singer recommended her younger fans read. The collection includes work by Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem and Melissa Etheridge. “They will inspire you to become a better leader,” she said.
