The Rajasthani rapper found his break with producer Sez On The Beat’s 2020 record ‘New Kids on the Block, Vol. 1’
It’s evident – to a certain degree – that the Indian hip-hop world slept on Luck aka Lucky Samtani despite his work with ace producers like Sez On The Beat aka Sajeel Kapoor.
Luck led with smoothly woven rap in Rajasthani on the track “Thara Moves,” which was part of Sez’s EP New Kids on the Block, Vol. 1 highlighting young talent in Indian hip-hop. The Bhilwara, Rajasthan-based artist appeared alongside hot new voices such as Litt Happu, D₹V, Rawal and NoNation and although Luck’s song didn’t receive as many streams as other artists, he began carving out his place in the country’s rap scene.
Originally working at a clothing store and then at his family-run footwear store, the 22-year-old also found his calling in cricket as a teen. “When I was in the 10th [standard], I used to play a lot of cricket and even represented in the under-16 team for Rajasthan. I thought I was going to make it big in cricket and almost gave up studies. The selectors liked me and I was fit as well, but they didn’t select me for some reason. That was a tough year. I got a bit depressed.”
As early as 2011, a friend played him Dr. Dre, Eminem and Skylar Grey’s song “I Need A Doctor” and Luck really liked it. “I’ve been writing shayaris and listening to music since childhood,” the producer-vocalist adds. By 2015 or so, Luck’s range of listening had increased enough to know that he didn’t just want to be a rapper but also dive into making R&B music.
For most of 2020 and 2021, Luck has been finessing exactly that side of himself. Including his latest single “Mistake” with pop/R&B and hip-hop artist Hrjs (originally made in 2018), there have been collaborations with hip-hop artists Shayan Roy (“Wanna Be Yours”), DualDollar (“Faraar”), Smoke (“Hauz Khas Wali”) and producer Premium (“Zarina“). He says, “I can release two albums worth of material. I’ve given it a lot of time in terms of production and stuff, but I don’t feel like it right now until I get more fame and reach. I think with singles, there’s a bigger market for them but I still need to find a market for my songs. I’m hoping I get a good deal and get a scene-changing thing.”
Currently focusing more on music than working in the family business, Luck says there’s been support to his ambitions so far. “They like my music at home. They know that I’m a rapper and support it and they like the music. They remember my songs too,” he says.
