BIGBANG’s comeback announcement is further accompanied by the news of T.O.P's departure from YG Entertainment
After years of speculations revolving around the group’s musical endeavors, the ‘Kings of K-Pop,’ BIGBANG are all set to make their highly anticipated comeback this spring. Composed of G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P and Daesung, the forthcoming release will mark their first comeback as a group since the release March 2018’s “Flower Road”.
Originally a quintet, Seungri departed from the label and group in March 2019, following his involvement in the Burning Sun scandal and eventual retirement announcement.
In a statement released earlier today, BIGBANG’s label YG Entertainment announced the group’s comeback and confirmed that the group has already recorded the single: “BIGBANG will be releasing a new song this spring.” The statement also said, “[BIGBANG] has already completed recording their new song, and they are currently preparing to shoot the music video.”
The official announcement further revealed details regarding T.O.P’s 16-year-long contract with YG Entertainment, “T.O.P’s exclusive contract with YG has ended, and he will be taking on a wide variety of new challenges as both an artist and an entrepreneur,” the label wrote. “We respected T.O.P’s desire to broaden the scope of his individual activities aside from just his promotions with BIGBANG, and he successfully came to an agreement about this with the other members.” Despite his departure from the agency, T.O.P will be participating in the group’s forthcoming release.
Celebrated for their innovative concepts and self-produced music, BIGBANG were instrumental in the globalization of K-pop. The group’s vast discography ranging from hip-hop, R&B, electronic and dance has influenced the work of several leading K-pop acts including BTS, BLACKPINK, iKon, Monsta X, GOT7, and more. The group’s producer-songwriter G-dragon, in particular, has been cited by numerous artists as their motivation to become K-pop idols. To date, several tracks from their discography (such as the 2016 release “Bang Bang Bang” which became a viral sensation on TikTok and Instagram) have continued to stand the test of time, proving the group’s unique sound resonates with listeners across ages.
