Bombay Bassment To Perform New Songs From Upcoming Album

Mumbai’s reggae hip-hop band have put together a hyper-charged Afrobeat set for their gig tonight in Mumbai

It’s been a big year for Mumbai’s hip-hop outfit Bombay Bassment. After winning the Best Emerging Act at the annual JD Rock Awards earlier this year and performing their first international gig in Dubai, the band have now entered the studio to record their debut album that they plan to release before the end of the gig season in early 2013. With their signature “Bombay flavored hip-hop,” as rapper and songwriter Robert “Bobkat” Omulo describes their sound, the 10-track album will feature freshly laid down tracks. “We have been playing the same songs for the past one and a half years and it’s time for them to vamoose. From now on, you’ll hear Bombay Bassment toast new material every time you see us live,” says Omulo. This is precisely what he has in mind for their two-hour set tonight at Blue Frog, Mumbai.

Bombay Bassment will be performing two new songs from their upcoming album, one of which they just finished “locking on” last night. “These are songs that you might have heard us play once or twice, while we were still knocking it about and figuring out its real sound. Tonight will be the first time you’ll hear the versions that will make it to the album,” says Omulo. The first track, “Midnight” is dubstep-heavy and features a new vocalist Crystal. “She’s completely fresh and hasn’t performed that much at all. There’s that ferocious groove in her voice that is awesome,” says Omulo. The second track that they will be unveiling is the high-tempo “Get Down.”

The band will also be performing their well-known tracks like “Happy People,” that has been modified with thrown in Afrobeat and reggae. “Right after our set, An Afrobeat DJ [mps PILOT] will be taking over. That’s why our set has been designed to be high-energy but groovy at the same time. You’ll hear up dropping plenty of ”˜riddims’,” says Omulo.

Catch Bombay Bassment perform live at the Blue Frog, Mumbai tonight 10 pm onwards. Entry Rs 300 post 9 pm.
