Last April, a mysterious teaser video titled “The Arrival” by event production company Oji featuring snippets from various international gigs and music festivals, made its way around timelines and newsfeeds, sending out the message of an upcoming warehouse party. A month after, Escalate, an event that brought dubstep veterans Skream & Benga to India for their debut turned out to be one of the best parties of the year. This year, Escalate II brings renowned English dubstep producer Flux Pavilion to India.

Last year, Joshua Steele, better known as Flux Pavilion, who has been DJing since 2008, began incorporating hip hop in his sound with his latest EP Freeway. Says the DJ about the hip hop edge to his music, “I love the groove of hip hop. It’s an art ”“ create a loop that people want to listen to for 4 minutes. I try to write my songs as simply and as groovy as possible, I think I get that from hip hop.”

Mikhail Mehra, co-founder of the agency Oji, and Flux Pavilion go way back to 2011. Mehra, who also heads the LA-based production house Motion Eccentrica, has directed and edited performance videos of artists like Skrillex, Foreign Beggars, Noisia, Benga, Skream and Flux Pavilion. Says Mehra about one of the earliest Flux Pavilion shows that he was at, “I remember it was at the Dubstep Music Awards when I was filming it in London in 2011. Also, the Ultra Music Festival where I was filming Flux going back to back with Doctor P in 2012. That was insane.”

Adds Mumbai-based dubstep and drum and bass producer Sound Avtar who played an opening set for Skream & Benga and will open for Flux Pavilion in Mumbai, “I’ll be sticking to what I did the last time with a heavy dose of dubstep and drum n’ bass along with with some of my upcoming productions.”  Mehra promises that the second edition of Escalate has been scaled up 10 times. He says, “This is probably going to be one of the best gigs around. If you attended the Skream & Benga show last year, expect that times 10 in terms of scale, sound, venue and in terms of everything. It’s on a beach and the weather’s insane. The sound is going to be massive. The music is going to be some of the best you’ve heard at a live show in Bombay, period.”

Catch Flux Pavilion live in Delhi at Club Lap on 11th January and in Mumbai at Juhu Hotel Lawns on 12th January. Passes are priced at Rs 1500 and are available here and at the venue.
