BTS Drop Teaser For Their Upcoming Single ‘Butter’

The monochromatic clip features an Eighties-inspired, synth-bass beat that seems to be a nod to Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust”

May 18, 2021

Days before one of BTS’ most highly-anticipated comebacks, the group takes the excitement a notch up with the release of a 20-second teaser. Following the series of intriguing concept clips and photos, the video’s teaser offers fans more clues on what the forthcoming single has in store.

The teaser opens with a monochromatic filter layered over the seven members standing motionless, despite a groovy percussion ensemble playing in the background. The sound soon switches to a delightful Eighties-inspired, synth-bass fusion, which the group effortlessly matches with synchronized head tilts. The clip wraps up with vocalist Jung Kook’s powerful, breathy voice declaring, “Get It / Let it roll,” all heard against a stack of pancakes with a cube of butter melting on its surface.

The teaser, which has now become the fastest music video teaser to reach one million likes on YouTube (a title last held by BTS’ 2020 pop ballad “Life Goes On”), also has a strong sonic correlation to the legendary band Queen’s 1980 hit “Another One Bites The Dust.” The rock icons later acknowledged the tribute on Twitter with the lyrics from the track in question: “Are you ready hey are you ready for this…”

In BTS’ latest interview with Rolling Stone, the “Butter” has been described as “A pure, swaggering dance-pop celebration in the retro vein of Bruno Mars, with layers of Jam and Lewis-style synths.” Leader RM, who is also credited as the composer and writer on the upcoming track, further described it as “very energetic” and “very summery,” with a “dynamic performance.”

BTS is all set to release the music video on May 21st at 1 PM KST (9:30 AM IST) followed by a global press conference which will take place an hour after the release.
