California Instrumental Rock Duo Movie Club Pay Tribute to Venues in ‘Driftwood’ Music Video

The Venice Beach-based act released their third EP ‘Man O’ War’ in March

For Californian rock duo Movie Club, live venues are “museums of vibe.” Part-tribute and part-psychedelic jam, their new music video “Driftwood” – off their recently released EP Man O’ War – sees guitarist Vince Cuneo and drummer Jessamyn Violet rock out in front of several venues, at a time when those spaces are amongst the worst hit in the music industry due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Filmed with their drumkit and guitar setup outside venues such as The Palladium, The Troubadour, The Roxy and The Mint and more, Movie Club dish out easygoing rock that steadily builds up into crunchy chorus-like arrangements. Formed in 2018, the duo have so far released three EPs – Kraken, Hammerhead and now Man O’ War – which shows a curve towards more swirling, psych rock songwriting than before.

Following the shoot for the music video to “Driftwood,” Cuneo tells us that they began writing and recording their debut full-length album. “Uncertainty is something very familiar to artists. The most important thing is for us to keep creating art. I feel very lucky to have a bandmate that wants to continue to work through these times. Nothing is more rewarding than pushing yourself and hearing the growth in the music,” he says.

Violet adds that the creation process and the end product itself will help them “stay hopeful as the world we knew was melting around us.” The drummer adds, “With no live shows in sight for us for the first time in our lives, we decided it was important to make a music video that captures the majestic nature of these iconic venues we miss so much. They may not all make it through this pandemic unless our government steps in and helps them. As artists, we can use our creative powers to shine a spotlight on what is important to us.”
