Canadian Tamil Artists Shan Vincent de Paul and Ami Team Up for Slick New Song ‘Amnesia’

The song is the second release from A.R. Rahman co-founded artist platform maajja

Toronto-based rapper Shan Vincent de Paul sings about forgetfulness around toxic relationships on his latest bop “Amnesia,” which features fellow Tamil-origin Canadian singer Ami aka Amirthregan Wijayanathan.

With an imposing slab of basslines provided by Vincent de Paul’s go-to producer La+ch, “Amnesia” wraps up within two minutes but centers on a honeyed hook delivered by the two vocalists. The rapper says in a statement, “I wanted to create something that had a tinge of Nineties nostalgia with a future twist. The melody has been floating in my head for a while, and as soon as I heard the bass line that La+ch sent me, it clicked so easily. A big part of the song was introducing Ami to my audience. His voice is so special and unique, I really do believe that he’s going to be a force in the scene soon enough, it’s inevitable.”

In the wavy music video directed by Vincent de Paul and shot by filmmaker/photographer Gajan Balan, we see Ami in a forlorn state. The rapper looks pensive, even as he morphs in the outro, to meet the melting flip on the music. Released via artist platform maajja – co-founded by A.R. Rahman and launched in January – “Amnesia” follows up the Sri Lankan-origin Canadian artist’s 2020 album Kothu Boys with fellow Tamil producer-singer Yanchan, plus singles such as “Die for Me” (released earlier this year) and the hard-hitting “One Hundred Thousand Flowers,” which was out in 2020.

While Vincent de Paul even released non-fungible tokens for sale on artwork related to “Amnesia,” he’s also readying his long anticipated third studio album Made in Jaffna for release later this year.
